Where to get urgent medical treatment this Winter

There are lots of ways to get urgent medical advice and treatment in Redbridge if you or a family member become unwell this winter. Remember that the first port of call might not always be A&E.

Where to seek medical advice and treatment:

  • Your local pharmacy – Many common illnesses such as coughs or colds can be easily treated by visiting your local pharmacy. You can speak to a pharmacist without having to make an appointment and they can advise you how to look after yourself at home with rest and over-the-counter treatments. To find your local pharmacy and the services it offers, visit
  • NHS 111 – If you need medical help quickly, but your condition is not life threatening, you can call NHS 111. Available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, the free telephone service is staffed by trained advisors and experienced clinicians who can assess you, offer advice and direct you to the right place to get the medical care you need as quickly as possible
  • Walk-in centres – Our walk-in centres are open to patients, including children, every day of the year (and most are open on Christmas Day). You do not need an appointment and can just “walk in”.
  • Urgent GP appointments – Urgent, same day, bookable appointments are available every day at GP hubs across the borough between 6.30pm and 10pm on weekdays, and between 8am and 8pm on Sundays. Find more information on urgent GP appointments or call NHS 111 or 020 3770 1888 to book an appointment.
  • So that everyone can get the treatment and advice they need, it’s important to remember that A&E should only be used by people with serious or life-threatening health problems requiring emergency treatment.

Maternity patients in BHR now need to provide proof of identity and address at first scan.

Barking, Havering and Redbridge University Hospitals NHS Trust is taking part in a national Department of Health pilot looking at how best to establish whether patients, across all departments, are eligible for free care.

The pilot will begin Monday 4 September.

In BHR, this will focus on our maternity patients. We’d like to ask for your support and when referring maternity patients to the Trust, please notify them that they’ll need to bring proof of identification with a photo; such as a valid driving licence, passport or residence permit; and; proof of address; such as a recent utility or council tax bill, or bank statement, to their first appointment. This will not affect the care they receive and no one will be refused maternity care.

A full list of acceptable identification can be found at Please feel free to direct patients to the website for more information.

Patient Access is fully operational and there is nothing to suggest any of our systems have been compromised or impacted as a result of the worldwide cyber-attack affecting NHS computer systems on Friday 12 May. If you do send a request through to your practice, please be aware that due to increased network security, the request may take slightly longer to deal with than normal.
